The fall lobster fishery for the Northumberland Strait typically runs from early August to the first week of October. This year, it will begin on August 11. The fishing zone stretches from Victoria to North Cape, PEI, and includes fishers in southern PEI, northwestern Nova Scotia, and southeastern New Brunswick.
Because boats are heavily loaded with lobster traps, good weather is essential for opening (or “setting”) day.
On Friday, August 8, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) held a conference call with representatives from Maritime lobster crews, harbour administrations, Environment Canada, Transport Canada, and Search and Rescue to review wind and wave forecasts for the area.
A follow-up call on Saturday morning confirmed the official season start date.
According to the DFO website, the season will close on October 12.
